Gingerbread house decorating made easy.

During the Christmas season I try to involve my children in the decorating process.

It helps create memories for them, memories that they hopefully one day, they will be able to pass down to their children. One way I let them help out is by decorating gingerbread houses to use as decor.

Decorating doesn’t have to be hard or a challenge. I take shortcuts all of the time.

Especially for gingerbread houses.

Here’s my secret, I buy already assembled houses with no shame but, I make it my own when it comes to decorating it and, I want to share with you today how I do just that.

This is the Kit I use. It already comes with white royal icing, but I always buy more to mix and make custom colors with, and just to have extra on hand. You can skip buying more and just use food coloring too.

I used Blue and white icing and then a few drops of green food coloring to get my color.

I painted my color on with a spatula.

Royal icing tends to drop with gravity so, once I put my base color on, I leaned my gingerbread house back, propped it up as evenly as possible and let it dry for 30 minutes. I did this so the icing didn’t slide off, and it leveled out any spatula lines.

Next, I started to outline details with plain white royal icing still kept the gingerbread house on its back so, my outlines didn’t drip.

I wasn’t too worried about being too precise with my lines just because, I really wanted that authentic homemade look and let’s be real, I’m not a baking decorator.

Next is the fun part, the details. I sprinkled the top of the icing with a sugar crystal sprinkles, then I made garland and a wreath out of red and green traditional sugar sprinkles.

I wanted to keep it pretty simple, I was close to being done here but, I felt like it needed one more thing, a bow!

For the roof, I covered it with white icing the. Sprinkled sugar crystal sprinkles on top.

For the side and back, I let my daughter take over. She did all of the outlining for the sides and backside.

To finish it off, I placed my gingerbread house on a cake plate, sprinkled some fake snowflakes and added some mini bottlebrush trees for the perfect Christmas kitchen decor piece.
